Pattern - Hat - Sheep Hat - SW Merino - DK or Aran - 2308
I did this design decades ago for a sweater. I lost the pattern and the motif. Took me almost a month to come up with what I believe is close to the original. I love the asymmetry. Looks like the sheep is standing outside in a field.
This Pattern is written for the DK & Aran weight yarns. It comes with 2 sizes and 3 versions. Something for everyone....
You could use any DK or Aran weight yarns as long as you get close to gauge - you could change needle size for gauge or if you want a different size.
Gauge: 19 sts/4" & 6 rounds/1" worked in stockinette stitch on US Size 6 (4 mm) needles.
HAT SIZE:
Average: 20-22" around head & 16" bottom edge over crown of head to bottom edge covering the ears.
Large: 22-23 1/2" around head & 16" bottom edge over crown of head to bottom edge covering the ears.
3 VERSIONS:
BRIM, 2 COLOR RIB, & TRADITIONAL RIB.
Please note: 2 Color Rib tend to make for a tight fit.
12/14/2023: I have added 2 new step 1 & 2 versions - so you now have 3 CO versions for the brim for this version. Work the large size for any DK weight yarns. As the brim is about 1" tighter.
You need: US Size 6 (4 mm) Double Pointed Needles for decreasing of the hat &
US Size 5 (3.75 mm) Circular Needles - 16" length &
US Size 6 (4 mm) Circular Needles - 24" length. Do NOT use a shorter length or your hat will be too small.
Marker.
2 skeins of any DK or Aran weight yarns in 2 different colors.
NOTE: You would have enough for 4 sheep hats with the 1 skein you decide to use for the sheep.
