This Pattern is written for Fleece Artist - Zephyr yarn.

A SPORT WEIGHT YARN.

We have added a new version the Valais Blacknose Sheep Version, as 2025 the Valais Blacknose Sheep is the breed of the year.

Pattern comes with 2 sizes and 3 version (3rd version being Valais Blacknose). 

Size: 22-23 1/2” (56-60 cm) circumference (around head) & 17” (43 cm)bottom edge over crown of head to bottom edge Version 1 & Valais Blacknose Version and 16” (40 cm) Version 2. 

Materials: 

MAIN COLOR: 1 skein Fleece Artist’s Hand Dyed Zephyr - Sport  - each skein approx. 410 yards (375m)/ 4.4 oz (125g) 100% Fine Superwash Merino, or any Sport weight yarn as long as you get gauge.

You have enough for 2 hats with 1 skein of the Main Color.

CONTRASTING COLORS: Minimum part of 2 skeins Fleece Artist’s Zephyr - Sport in minimum 2 different colors. 

CC1 - Natural  (approx. 100-120 yards (108-130m))                     CC2 - Wine (approx. 50-60 yards (54-65m))                               CC3 - Amber (approx. 20-30 yards (22-33m)) - You could use the same color as the sheep or Main Color.

MAIN COLOR for Valais Blacknose Sheep: 1 skein Fleece Artist’s Zephyr - each skein approx. 410yards (375m)/ 4.4 oz (125g). You have enough for at least 2 hats. 

100% Fine Superwash Merinior. Or any Sport weight yarn as long as you get gauge.

CONTRASTING COLORS: Minimum part of 3 Mini skeins Fleece Artist’s Zephyr in 3 different colors, plus 1 Midi Skein in Natural.. Or use your own leftovers in Sport weight yarns.

Gauge:  BEFORE WASH: 6 sts/1” & 6 1/2 rounds/1” on US Size 4 (3.5mm) Knitting Needle in stockinette.

AFTER WASH: 5 3/4 sts/1” & 6 1/2 rounds/1”. Check your gauge before knitting. 

NEEDLES:

US Size 3 (3.25 mm) Circular Knitting Needle - 16” (40 cm) length, US Size 4 (3.5 mm) Circular Needle - 24” (60 cm) length (do NOT use smaller length or your hat will be too tight) & US Size 4 (3.5 mm) DP Needles for decreasing crown of hat. 

I did this design decades ago for a sweater. I lost the pattern and the motif. Took me almost a month to come up with what I believe is close to the original. I love the asymmetry. Looks like the sheep is standing outside in a field.
